Microdermabrasion gained in popularity within the last 10 years as a new technique to improve the appearance of skin. Microdermabrasion techniques manage to remove the outer layers of skin, which are composed of dead cells, in order to get to newer, healthier skin beneath. This technique tends to reduce the appearance of scars, fine lines, and wrinkles on the face, and can also reduce the severity of acne.

Because of the popularity of microdermabrasion, however, there are a multitude of different microdermabrasion machines that are in use. Generally, these machines run in price from a couple thousand dollars to about as much as the cost of a small car. To help you understand what to expect, what follows is a brief description of the different kinds of microdermabrasion machines.

Crystal-Based Machines

Most microdermabrasion machines work by blasting the skin with tiny crystals, which essentially abrade and peel the outer layers of skin away, while a vacuum pulls used crystals and dead skin cells away from your face, cleaning it. There are many different types of crystals that are used, the most common being corundum crystals. The benefit to corundum microdermabrasion machines is that the crystals have uneven surfaces, making it a great abrasive, it does not cause allergic reactions, and it has antibacterial properties which help to inhibit the development of acne.

Other crystal microdermabrasion machines use materials such as sodium bicarbonate crystals, which aren't quite as hard and may be less efficient. Many modern microdermabrasion machines give the option to choose between different kinds of crystals, based on your preference. The big benefit to the other crystals is that they are less expensive than the corundum crystals.

Machines Without Crystal

Gaining in popularity these days are microdermabrasion machines which do not use crystals, but use a diamond-tipped wand to provide mechanical abrasion, using minute motions rather than the blasting of crystals. Some patients prefer the microdermabrasion machines without crystals, claiming that they are more comfortable to have used on them. In addition, the microdermabrasion machines without crystals are supposedly faster than the machines with crystals, making them ideal for those who want to keep the procedure short.

Ultimately, while these machines without crystals are more expensive, the results will be the same. So, if you are searching for a spa, you can choose one that uses the microdermabrasion machines that you prefer, which will ensure that you get the results that you want on a machine with the costs that you prefer.
