Acne has never been thought of as something serious and as such there is always a tendency amongst people to neglect it a bit. Most of the people tend to take medicines of their own. And it goes without saying that even if the acne is mild, acne treatment would be far more effective if you would take medicines prescribed by an expert doctor.
Acne treatment through medication can be in the form of oral drug or topical ones. In most of the cases acne treatment is accomplished with the help of antibiotics. Acne treatment with antibiotics can be in the form of oral medicines or in the form of lotion. And in case of topical medicines, you would find zinc and retinoids being used very often.
You must have heard of the antibiotic tetracycline. This is perhaps the most common antibiotics being used for acne treatment. Tetracycline fights the bacteria causing acne and it also helps in reducing inflammation of the skin. If condition of your acne is severe, it might take months for antibiotics to take effect and sometimes you might have to continue taking antibiotics even after your acne has been created. One thing more, tetracycline has been found to be having side effects if taken for prolonged periods. It might result in increased sensitivity to sunlight causing sun burns. It is a strict prohibited for children less than twelve and also for pregnant women as it might lead to discoloring of the teeth.
Acne treatment can also be accomplished with the use of ointments. Ointments prove far more useful in acne treatment and if you are worried about bacteria getting resistant to it, you can always use ointments with tropical treatments like benzoyl peroxide. You might also use retinoids for acne treatment. These are derived from vitamin A and can be applied directly on the skin. It helps in treating blackheads and whiteheads.
In severe case you might take oral retinoids. This helps to peel out the upper layer of the skin opening the clogged pores and these also help to reduce the secretion of sebum thus helping in acne treatment. There is a caveat though. There are some side effects of retinoids and you should be very careful about it. It might cause birth defects in pregnant women. It might also cause liver damage and depression. So, you should be under the supervision of a dermatologist if you are taking medicines.
