Scarring is not that much of a problem with people having mild acne but the problem of scarring can be quite common with people suffering from severe acne. And scarring is what that most scares teenagers. But there are many acne treatments which can reduce scars to a minimum (it wouldn't be visible) and much more than that old scars could also be removed with these new techniques. And before we talk of scars, we should make it clear what actually comprises a scar. If you have acne, it is sure to leave a red blotch on your skin but that is not what is called a scar. It would disappear by itself in a few weeks to a few months. But the marks that remain for longer periods and don't vanish by themselves are termed as scars. And these scars require special attention.

First thing first, DONOT disturb your acne. You should not go on picking your acne. You should not squeeze your acne. There is no need for you to try to remove blackheads and whiteheads by squeezing. What this squeezing does is that it spreads the bacteria (causing acne) to other parts of your body and it would also damage your skin resulting in permanent scarring. If your acne is mild, you can take certain precautions and everything would be fine. The precautions would include keeping your skin clean and if necessary you might also implement self-medication.

But in case you have severe acne, self medication would not do the job. You would surely need to take help of a dermatologist for your acne solution. Dermatologist might prescribe you some oral medication and topical ointments. It all depends on the severity of your acne. If the dermatologist feels, he could also use some physical methods to cure your acne. Your whiteheads and blackheads could be removed by your dermatologist. Pus filled nodules could also be drained by physical means. But you must understand that all these physical methods are used by a dermatologist under controlled environment with sterile instruments. And this means that you don't have to try any of it by yourself. Instead of doing any good, you would make much trouble for yourself.

One thing more-most of the people have the habit of picking scabs that forms over old acne lesions. You must understand that scabs form an important part of the healing process and you would be disturbing it by peeling it off. You would also increase the time necessary for the healing process to continue.

As for existing scars, you can do a lot to make them disappear. You could use chemical peels to your skin. What this does is that it removes the top microscopic layer of the skin and that helps in rejuvenation of the cells underneath. But if the scarring is too severe, you might have to take help of laser or dermabrasion techniques. Lasers try to remove the top damaged layer of your skin and also tighten the skin underneath. That effectively helps in raising the depression caused by the scar. The doc might need to numb the affected area before using lasers because that might be painful.

In dermabrasion, the whole surface of scare is scraped away to let a new layer of skin grow there. That replaces the scarred layer and a new layer without scar grows.
